Winemaker Richard Shelton
While traveling the world and enjoying wine experiences in the wilds of Patagonia near the southern tip of South America, our winemaker, Richard Shelton, discovered his true calling was winemaking.
Although born and raised in Texas, where he completed a B.S. in Biochemistry, he pursued his new love in the Australian state of South Australia, an area known for producing red wines that rival the best that California and the world have to offer. Richard received a Masters of Enology at the renowned Roseworthy Program at Adelaide University. During his time there, he was fortunate to work at the Australian Wine Research Institute Winery at the school’s Waite Campus.
In his quest for winemaking knowledge, Richard’s travels took him next to Pennsylvania, where he trained to make traditional Ice wine, and then back to Texas, where he worked with many fringe varietals.
Soon he was on the move again with an exciting opportunity as a Winemaker at California’s Monterey Wine Company, concentrating on fruit grown on the Central Coast. At this custom-crush facility, Richard learned from many veteran Winemakers and worked on an extensive range of varietals.
Next he moved to the Sonoma Valley and joined Kosta Browne, a 20-year-old boutique winery well known and celebrated for its high-achieving winemaking team and extraordinary wines. Here, Richard had the opportunity to work with high-end Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays created from grapes on the Sonoma Coast, Russian River and in the Santa Lucia Highlands.
With Richard’s knowledge and experience gained in wine-growing regions around the world, including Ballard Lane’s Central Coast, you can look forward to an unforgettable experience in each bottle of Ballard Lane wine that will keep you coming back for more.
